The Key Identification Signs

Pocket Gophers

• Mound shape: Fan-shaped or horseshoe-shaped with a plugged hole on one side
• Plant damage: Plants disappear from below — roots consumed underground, stems pulled down
• Irrigation damage: Drip lines severed or pulled underground by feeding gophers
• Invisible animal: Gophers are almost exclusively underground — if you see the animal it's likely a squirrel

Moles

• Mound shape: Volcano-shaped, more symmetrical than gopher mounds, with no visible plugged hole
• Surface ridges: Moles push up visible ridges across lawns — gophers do not create surface ridges
• Soft areas: Spongy, collapsing areas in lawn reveal tunnel systems below
• No plant consumption: Moles eat earthworms and grubs, not plant roots

California Ground Squirrels

• Burrow entrance: Visible open hole 3–4 inches in diameter with loose soil pushed to one side
• Visible animals: Ground squirrels are active above ground during daylight hours
• Colony behavior: Multiple entrance holes in a small area indicate a colony
• Slope damage: Extensive burrow systems under slopes, retaining walls, or foundations
